The War of 1812

Why Go to War? France promises to stop attacking American ships, we continue to trade with them BUT….do we go to war with Britain?

The War Hawks These are members of Congress from the South and West that wanted war. - Henry Clay was their leader Clay had 4 reasons for war Revenge against Britain from the past Conquer Canada Since Spain is England’s friend, conquer Florida England was supplying Native Americans with guns

Settlers Pushing West Tecumseh – creates a league of Indian tribes – Natives give up white ways Whites are warned to stop moving west - War is officially declared against Britain in June of 1812

II. Battles of Mr. Madison’s War * This war was fought on 4 sides West – The Battle of Tippecanoe North – Battle of Sackets Harbor The Battle of the Thames (1813) - Invading Canada from Detroit, William Hull gains control of Lake Erie - Tecumseh dies at this battle East – Washington and Baltimore

The Burning of Washington

The Battle of New Orleans- Andrew Jackson with 3100 Kentucky and VA volunteers, defeats British and becomes national hero. 2036 British died while only 21 Americans died. Treaty of Ghent – Ends war on Dec. 24, 1814 - There is no change of territory…but Americans view this as a huge moral victory and NATIONALISM surges.
