Eating Disorders By: Rhonda Barlow-Glynn County

What is an eating disorder? An eating disorder is present when a person experiences extreme disturbances in eating behavior. It may involve severe reduction of food intake or extreme overeating. They may have feelings of extreme distress or concern about body weight or shape.

What is an eating problem? Everyone experiences an eating problem at some point in their lives. For example: a. skipping a meal b. “pigging out with friends” c. overeating at a holiday meal An Eating Problem is not the same as an Eating Disorder. An Eating Disorder is when the person goes to the extreme and has psychological, emotional and possibly genetic issues which may be at the root of the problem. Persons with an eating disorder will need treatment in order to overcome the disorder.
