Welcome Eden Project Adventure Centre Monday, 23rd May to Wednesday, 25th May 2016 Orchard Vale Community School Years 3 and 4

Adventure Central Fully accredited and inspected organisation – LOtC (Learning Outside the Classroom) - Adventuremark (a non-statutory safety scheme by the Adventure Activity Industry Advisory Committee for providers of adventurous activities) - BAPA (British Activity Provider Association – assuring quality safety in the activity industry) Offering children the opportunity to experience the thrills of being away from home and learning valuable life skills along the way. Run by education and activity specialists and delivered by fully trained, qualified and experienced instructors who encourage, help and inspire young people.

Safety and Wellbeing All instructors are experienced, hold the relevant National Governing Body qualifications, have DBS clearance and are qualified First Aiders. Instructors will remain with the groups throughout their Residential on a ratio of 1:12 thus building a strong relationship, and a real sense of security. Each group will be accompanied by a member of Orchard Vale staff. There will always be a senior member of Adventure Central staff on duty until 11pm, and there is 24 emergency contact available at the YHA. During the day the school office will be able to pass on any important messages. Emergency Contact information is held by all Orchard Vale staff attending the residential. Mrs Baker and Mrs Pearce will be the Home Contacts after hours.

Learning Experience All activities are designed to include many learning opportunities, develop key skills and support personal development. Adventure Central provides a wide range of activities to develop life skills, build self-confidence and encourage team work. The activities are great fun and the children don’t actually feel they are learning at the time.

Accommodation and Facilities We will be staying in:- Stylish, en-suite, high spec bedrooms made from recycled shipping containers at the YHA Eden Project (powered by Snoozebox). Girls and boys will be sleeping in separate rooms of 2-3 children per room. All bedding is provided and bedrooms are centrally heated. Staff accommodation is located close to our children. Day of Departure from OV 0830 on Monday, 23rd May – register in the School Hall. All medicines and pocket money (no more than £10) will be collected by staff. Staff can only administer prescribed medication in it’s original packaging with your child’s name on it. Medication will need a completed medical administration form. The exceptions are for travel sickness tablets and Calpol. If your child is likely to suffer from headaches during the residential – sachets are more convenient for staff to store and administer and will require a medical administration form. Luggage – children should be able to carry their own bags. (please keep these as compact as possible as rooms are quite snug) Coach is booked to depart at 0900. On arrival at Eden Project we will unload our luggage at the YHA, eat our packed lunches ready to start our first activity at 1400.

A typical days events Breakfast between 0730 and 0900. First activities start around 0900 (2 in the morning) 10 minute mid morning drink break Lunch time allocation between 1215 – 1330 Afternoon activities start at 1400 (2 in the afternoon) 10 minute mid afternoon drink break Evening meal time allocation from 1730. Sunset activities 1900 - 2000. Lights out by 10.15pm

Daytime Activities All day entrance into the Eden Project Climbing Abseiling Archery Body Zorbing – in short bursts, participants are strapped securely inside the zorb to play team/individual games and hopefully complete a 360 degree roll. Fencing Pioneering – work as a group to create a structure that will support and carry them through a scenario. Rocket Launch - take part in various challenges to win components required to assemble and fire a water powered rocket.

Sunset Activities Secret Biomes Disco We will be able to explore the Biomes after the Eden Project is closed to the public and take part in activities designed to create a magical atmosphere. Make rainforest music; sit quietly listening to the frogs; make a story or explore by moonlight. Disco An evening of socialising with others school groups. A great opportunity to make new friends, dance, sing along to the latest songs and have some fun!

Catering Facilities Children will be provided with 3 meals each day (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Only meal not provided is lunch on the day of arrival. Please could parents send a packed lunch. We will be allocated a time slot for use of the dining room. It is important that you let us know now if your child has any special dietary requirements so that these can be catered for.

On final day On Wednesday, 25th May we plan to leave the Eden Project at approximately 1400 and hope to arrive back at Orchard Vale at 1600. The children will be quite tired and looking forward to getting home.
