Defining Success Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems. Read as is.
In this lesson we will: Use multiplication and division in the relationship among the values in a table of ratios Organize equivalent ratios using a ratio table Read as is
By the end of this lesson you will be able to: Organize the ratio of red and blue icing in a ratio table Use the equivalent ratios to determine how much icing you will need for 3 dozen, 4 dozen and 5 dozen cupcakes Example: X 3 X 2 Read as is. -Example: Let’s look at the ratio table below. You can see that for 1 dozen cupcakes, it takes 2 tablespoons of red icing and 3 tablespoons of blue icing. Let’s determine the amount of icing we would need to decorate 2 dozen cupcakes. To do that, we must scale up from 1. 1 times 2 is 2; therefore, I must also multiply the amount of icing by 2. 2 times 2 is for and 3 times 2 is 6. I would need 4 tablespoons of red icing and 6 tablespoons of blue icing to decorate 2 dozen cupcakes. Now, let’s determine the amount of icing we would need to decorate 3 dozen cupcakes. Again, we must scale up from 1. 1 times 3 is 3. I must also multiply the amount of icing by 3. 2 times 3 is 6 and 3 times 3 is 9; therefore, we would need 6 tablespoons of red icing and 9 icing to decorate 3 dozen cupcakes. Let’s get started! Cupcakes (dozen) 1 2 3 Red icing (tbs.) 2 Blue icing 3 4 6 6 9
