Presentation transcript:

6th Grade Weekly Newsletter Volume 6 Issue 2 September 15th, 2017 Sign up for important updates from the 6th Grade Team Science Weekly Review The students reviewed the science safety rules and took a quiz. The quiz submissions are graded and can be viewed on their Schoology accounts. The students also began their first unit: Variables. Science Next Week The students will create a plan on how they will test the pendulums that they created and they will identify different variables that could effect the number of swings their pendulum makes in a given amount of time. The students will test their pendulums, collect data, graph their data and report their findings.   Social Studies With Ms. Hall This Week This week students compares and contrasted the regional settlement areas and evaluated them according to the benefits the geographic features offered for early man. They prioritized the properties that would aid and those that would hinder settlement; then chose the area they felt would be the best. Students reviewed the 9-point writing process and began working on their outline to assist them in writing their position essay. Next Week  Students will continue to work on their essay utilizing the 9-step writing process as their guide.   We will review the continents in the Eastern Hemisphere paying specific attention to Asia and Europe.

Take A Peek At Next Weeks Math! 6th Grade Weekly Newsletter Volume 6 Issue 2 September 15th, 2017 Math with Ms. York Week in Review Just about two weeks of ratios down and plenty more to go! This week students continued to find equivalent ratios. Students are also now learning how to solve word problems involving ratios using tape diagrams. Take A Peek At Next Weeks Math! Monday 9.18 Lesson 6: Solving Problems by Finding Equivalent Ratios Tuesday 9.19 Lesson 7: Associated Ratios & the Value of a Ratio Wednesday 9.20 Lesson 9: Tables of Equivalent Ratios Thursday 9.21 Lesson 10: The Structure of Ratio Tables – Addition & Multiplication Friday 9.22 Lesson 10: Comparing Ratio Tables ELA with Mr. Knowles     *All students are required to read at least three AR books every marking period. One of these books has to be based on Social Studies. The first AR book and quiz is due on October 11, 2017. This past week students presented their shoebox project and took the ELA STAR Test. The shoebox project allowed students to fully introduce themselves to their classmates. Each student had to have at least five items in their box that represents who they are. Two required items were a paragraph (developed with the district writing process) about them and an acrostic of their name that described their individual traits. Middle School Open House Wednesday September 20th from 5:00 – 6:30pm Importance of IRT Reading is a key skill in a student’s academic journey.  Our goal for Independent Reading Time (IRT) is to help students build reading stamina, increase reading ability, and create life-long readers.  “The time spent reading a book is the best predictor of a student’s reading proficiency.”  (One World Literacy Foundation, 2014)    ELA Next Week Next week students will launch their study of the novel Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. In this novel we’ll be establishing a set of routines for thinking, writing, and talking about Bud’s rules to live by. Students will read the novel closely for its figurative language and word choice, analyzing how these affect the tone and meaning of the text.
