Anything that stands for or represents something else American flag, bald eagle, Uncle Sam, tree of great peace Explain why the Iroquois Constitution was important to the Native Americans who agreed to it. Explain the difference between a Puritan and a Separatist. Puritan – wanted to “purify” the Church of England (Anglican) Separatists – wanted to separate from that church Why is it incorrect to say that the Pilgrims fled England to come to America specifically because of religious persecution? They fled to Holland for religious freedom and came to America to establish a government based upon biblical principles What literary term describes the writing style of William Bradford? Puritan plain style (writing in which uncomplicated sentences and ordinary words are used to make plain, direct statements)

Define extended metaphor. A comparison of two unlike things without using like or as that is carried over multiple lines of stanzas in a poem (or throughout an entire work) Define inversion and create one example. The placing of words out of typical order in sentences, often used in classical poetry “If ever two were one, then surely we” What is huswifery? Notice the word is not capitalized or in quotes (not the poem) Tasks that are essential to the upkeep of a household (like Home Economics)

Who is the speaker? To whom are they speaking? What is the poet’s tone? What is the mood/atmosphere created by the poem? What is the theme expressed in the poem? What patterns exist that help construct meaning in the work? What style elements contribute to the overall effect of the work?
