Why your child needs your support at home? A New National Curriculum was implemented in 2014. The new National requirements demand far more from the children than they ever have before. The expectation is that they pass these tests and if they do not then they will re-sit these when they attend Secondary school. In addition to the expectations from last year, your child will be expected to complete a timed online times table test. Again they will be expected to re-sit this if they fail.

As well as the fantastic work at school being done for your child, we will expect parents to regularly support their child’s learning in Maths and Reading.

How will we support you? Workshops will be published on the newsletter, on the school website and on the parent board Keep an eye on outdoor notice boards as they will display information for you to support your child at home We are further developing the school website this year where you will find resources to support your child at home There are also planned opportunities this year allowing parents to come into school to understand more about learning. This may include: Library time, open mornings/afternoons, coffee mornings etc

Reminders… PE kit to go home every Friday and returned on Monday Swimming / strings / ear piercings out on PE / swimming days Learning diary signed and brought in daily One reading and library book taken home and brought in daily Hair tied back if it is longer than shoulder length Regular head lice checks Correct uniform / shirts tucked in / names on clothes Class / Birthday assemblies now on Tuesdays for KS1

Reading at school in Year 5 and 6 The class teacher will highlight which targets your child needs to work on each week. The phonics/ spelling rule your child has been working on. Please work on the rule each week with your child at home.

Homework in Year 5 and 6 Expectations: Your child MUST read every day Practise reading and spelling high frequency words four times per week Practise the times table your child is working on 4 times a week. If highlighted by the teacher could your child learn how to tell the time 12/24 hour clock Your child might benefit from practising their handwriting Your MUST complete the homework set by the class teacher Please write the five high frequency words you have worked on with your child each week. These can be found at the back of your child’s learning diary This is where you and the teacher can correspond

If expectations are not met… Class teacher will have a discussion with the child Class teacher will then also have a discussion with the parent at the end of the day. Learning Diaries will be monitored daily and if they are not signed then your child will be expected to attend the lunchtime homework club (15 minutes). However there are circumstances when you will not be able to do this so please inform the class teacher via the Learning Diary or verbally. If there are still concerns a meeting will be arranged with the class teacher and an Assistant Headteacher. This could further escalate to a 1:1 meeting with the Headteacher We all want the best outcomes for your children and sometimes circumstances can be challenging. Therefore it is important you communicate issues or concerns to the class teacher.

Home-School Agreement Expectations You will find this on the first page of your child’s Learning Diary under Home-School Agreement. It must be signed by the parent, child and teacher.

Why no more Bug Club? As a school, we decided the children need challenging, rich books by well known children’s authors. We want to promote a love of reading as much as possible and ensure children are exposed to books that inspire them. As a result, we are also aiming for a positive impact on the quality and creativity of their writing. The expectations of the new curriculum are much better suited to this than Bug Club.
