Networks, Computer Software, Phone apps Research Interests: Dr Vindya Wijeratne Lecturer, Networks Group Networks, Computer Software, Phone apps Research Interests: Quality of Service/Quality of Experience Network performance at the edge with wired/wireless access Energy-efficient networking Current Teaching: Communications & Networks (QMUL) Java Programming EBU4201 (JP)

Past JP UG Project Examples: Networks (1/2) Dr Vindya Wijeratne Lecturer, Networks Group Past JP UG Project Examples: Networks (1/2) Impact of Buffer Sizing on Energy Efficiency and Performance (published in IET Networks) - study of the trade-offs between energy efficiency and performance in relation to sizing router buffers under different network conditions An Energy-Efficient Network Implemented With Junos SDK (published at IEEE CCNC), joint project with Juniper Networks - prototype system which puts selected router interfaces to sleep in order to save energy and wakes them up when the network becomes congested Buffer sizing: produced guidelines on buffer-sizing under a range of network scenarios: NS-3 sim Junos: student was placed at Juniper Networks part-time and had a company mentor

Past JP UG Project Examples: Networks (2/2) Dr Vindya Wijeratne Lecturer, Networks Group Past JP UG Project Examples: Networks (2/2) Buffer de-bloating with LTE access networks - study of techniques to alleviate the bufferbloat issue in the context of LTE networks and their effects on user experience Internet Traffic Analytics - analysis and visualisation of data such as round trip times experienced from different geographical locations in China and via different ISP networks Buffer de-bloating - mainly ran simulation experiments with different Active Queue Management techniques: NS-3 simulations Traffic analytics – results will be useful for potential customers e.g. in choosing an ISP: made use of tools such as ping, traceroute, batch scripts etc.

Past JP UG Project Examples: Software + Hardware Dr Vindya Wijeratne Lecturer, Networks Group Past JP UG Project Examples: Software + Hardware Raspberry Pi based Smarthome prototype - prototype system that can control devices around the house such as lights via a web interface implemented on a Raspberry Pi Smart Supermarket prototype - prototype system representing a supermarket system involving electronic shelf labels that get updated automatically as stock levels go up (i.e. deliveries) and down (i.e. items being checked out) Raspberry Pi – potential to extend in many ways, e.g. control blinds, other devices such as TVs, also to get feedback from the devices back to the computer, voice commands Supermarket – LCD screens for shelf labels, scanner at check-outs connected to a central database in order to keep track of stock levels. Pricing info will also be displayed in the electronic shelf labels saving staff from having to keep printing and pasting new labels.

Past JP UG Project Examples: Software (including phone apps) Dr Vindya Wijeratne Lecturer, Networks Group Past JP UG Project Examples: Software (including phone apps) Interactive technical E-book builder - website that allows authors to publish partially written books, receive feedback which can be used to improve the books prior to publishing Beijing journey planner – computer/phone app - website/phone app that facilitates users to determine available options for a journey on public transport in Beijing, based on day/time and other user preferences E-book – readers are allowed to read a few pages for free with the option of purchasing more; they can leave feedback, authors can respond etc. Journey planner – similar to the TFL one; was done for trains only. Could consider buses in the future.
