Map of Japanese Expansion

Pearl Harbor Bombed

II. How Pacific War fought: ISLAND HOPPING: Get to Island Take control from Japan Make it base for US Bomber (B-29’s) Firebomb Japan Slow & Costly strategy Carriers - Enormous Ships that had many planes on them. Moving bases for planes.

V. Dropping the Bomb USA wanted unconditional surrender = Emperor Hirohito to step down. Japan revered him as God on Earth, would not surrender. Potsdam Declaration: “Surrender or face prompt and utter destruction”.-USA “....” No reply -Japan Manhattan Project: led by Robert Oppenheimer built the first ever Atomic Bombs --------------------------------------------- 1) Hiroshima - Bomb “Little Boy” killed 120,000 people instantly and another 70,000 died from radiation poisoning. 2) Nagasaki -Bomb “Fat Man” killed 75,000 people instantly These 2 Bombs > Americans killed in entire Pacific War

VI. Victory for USA! August 15, 1945 - V-J Day = Victory in Japan Day International Military Tribunals would sentence 25 Japanese leaders with war crimes Did not charge Emperor Hirohito (to avoid backlash) Many Japanese not charged by trading information learned from Unit 731.
