Improving Resident Physician Confidence and Participation in Sporting Event Coverage Using a Sports Medicine Pocket Guide and Resident Advocate Jacob J. Miller, MD Courtney I. Hathaway, MD North Colorado Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program, Greeley, CO Introduction Results Discussion New Innovations Report: Sporting event coverage is an important part of family medicine training. However, engaging resident physicians in covering local sporting events can be challenging. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of two specific interventions in improving resident confidence and level of participation in covering sporting events at a full-spectrum family medicine residency. Many residents feel a responsibility to provide local sporting event coverage and believe this provides valuable exposure for family medicine in the community. Having a pocket resource improved resident confidence and willingness to cover sporting events. Resident sports medicine advocates and mentors are beneficial in increasing resident capability for covering sporting events. Providing a pocket reference and sports medicine advocate increased events covered by residents. Agree Neither Resident Survey: Disagree N/A Methods Cross-sectional study Created point-of-care sports medicine handbook (“The House Officer’s Sideline Sourcebook” or “The H.O.S.S.”) and distributed to residents at orientation Appointed resident advocate to encourage coverage of local Slaughterhouse Derby Girls Roller Derby Club Surveyed residents after one year regarding the impact of The H.O.S.S. and resident advocate New Innovations report of sports medicine coverage compared to prior years Future Directions Continue to refine and update The H.O.S.S. Appoint additional advocates for community sporting events (i.e. rodeo, high school teams, and endurance events) Special thanks to Dr. Kurt Dallow for his mentorship and encouragement during this study.
