CLC Parents Night 2017 Freshman English

Shannon Schroeder 16th year teaching English at CLC Mother of 3 boys (6, 9, and 11) Husband teaches Chemistry here at CLC Teaching philosophy: - Treat your children like I would treat my kids High expectations Expect hard work in the classroom Parent Communication Organization

Course Outcomes As a result of this course, your students will: Read with understanding and fluency. Read and understand literature (both fiction and non-fiction). Understand and use the elements of the writing process. Develop fundamental writing skills. Acquire, assess, and communicate information through research. Understand grammatical elements. Become familiar with the SAT. Develop organizational skills and study skills.

Units of Study Unit 1: Short Stories- Rites of passage, close reading and annotating, finding literary devices. Unit 2: Argumentative writing- Making a sound claim and backing it up with support and research. Unit 3: Fictional reading- Abe Lincoln Award independent novel, high interest reading, discussion skills. Unit 4: Non-fiction reading- article of the week, SAT and argumentative writing practice . Unit 5: The Odyssey- hero, hero's journey, exposure to epic poetry. Ongoing: Vocabulary - SAT vocabulary, Greek roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Ongoing: Grammar - Parts of speech review, fragments, run-ons, apostrophes Ongoing: SAT practice.

How can I help my student be successful? • Check my website for daily lesson plans, due dates, etc. (only if needed!). Check grades weekly; e-mail me and speak to your student if there is missing work (especially summative assessments). Google classroom (ask your student). Check your e-mail for upcoming vocabulary quizzes, or major summative assignments. Freshman year does count!
