Oct6th Learning Target: I can understand about early advocates for African Americans in the late 1800s. Literacy Target: to analyze author’s claims, assumptions and premises. Opener: What do you think life was like for African Americans in the South AFTER the Reconstruction Era ended in 1877? (Remember background knowledge)

Review Time Civil War was between 1861-1865 Reconstruction Era 1865-1877 Many legal advance for African Americans (13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments) HOWEVER- 1876- North pulls troops out of the South and white- supremacist Democrats take over RESULT: African Americans become sharecroppers Laws put into place to prevent African Americans from voting KKK had support and terrorized people voting Republican Lynching became wide spread Jim Crow Laws: SEGREGATION- upheld by Plessy vs Ferguson Two Leaders EMERGE- Booker T Washington and W.E.B. Dubois
