The Long March THE GAME! PLAY

OCTOBER 1934 For the entire year Guomindang troops have been encircling the Jiangxi Soviet. The only option is to break free of the blockhouse rings and retreat to the Yanan Soviet in the North. NEXT

More equipment to stop the GMD from capturing them BREAKING FREE The first decision you have to make is to decide what you should take on this treacherous march to the North. What do you decide to carry with you? As little as possible, so the army can move rapidly More equipment to stop the GMD from capturing them

GAME OVER Your army did not carry enough equipment to defend against the Guomindang raids, and are unable to break away from the blockhouse rings. Game over. BACK TO START

JIANGXI SOVIET XIANG RIVER

XIANG RIVER Fight with GMD Turn back to Jiangxi Just one month after setting out onto the march, a scout locates heavy Guomindang defensive positions on the Xiang River. Do you decide to carry on with the march and fight against the GMD troops, or turn back to Jiangxi? Fight with GMD Turn back to Jiangxi

GAME OVER Your army returns to Jiangxi and is massacred by the GMD troops. Game over. BACK TO START

DADU RIVER The Dadu River gorge is treacherous and heavily guarded by GMD troops. Across the river is the only way towards the Yanan Soviet. The GMD have blown up the suspension bridge and only fragile chains remain. You have a choice to send a small group of soldiers across the remnants of the bridge to ambush the GMD, or to move west towards the local tribes and set up a base there. Send troops across the suspension bridge Negotiate with the local tribes

GAME OVER The local tribes do not welcome communists and the exhausted Red Army are without a base. Soldiers desert the army and betray Mao Zedong to the GMD. Game over. BACK TO START

OCTOBER 1935 In October 1935 the Red Army, by now numbering only 7,000 marched into Yanan Province. They had managed to flee the GMD troops and, with the arrival of other communist troops, set up a new base in Yanan. Although costly, the Long March won the CCP support from peasants, gave them one more chance to regroup, and became an epic of Chinese history. NEXT
