Family lost money during the depression. Dropped out of high school to work as a warehouse shipping clerk. Persuaded the University of Michigan to admit him as a student – began writing dramas as a college student. 1947 – All My Sons 1949 – Pulitzer Prize for Death of a Salesman 22 January 1953 – The Crucible opens on Broadway – only ran for 197 performances
The Crucible uses the Salem witch trials of 1692 as a means of attacking the anti-Communist “witch hunts” going on in Congress at the time. Denied a passport to Belgium for the European opening of his play. His political views about social justice and equality among the classes made him a target of the House UnAmerican Activities Committee (HUAC) from 1954-1956. Miller lost money and career as a result.
