Q. What makes people angry in conflict situations? Q. What do people do to make matters worse? Q. What can people do to make matters better? Let’s record our ideas.

Draw two columns then write these headings: Things that make conflict worse Things that can reduce conflict Hotting up Cooling down

Write the words in their correct column…… Shouting listening swearing keeping calm accusing name-calling being respectful Saying “you always…” or “you never…” Saying sorry. Trying to understand the other person’s point of view. Saying what you would like to happen. Angry body language and gestures - pointing, leaning forward, clenching fist, scowling…. Not standing too close. Admitting the things you did were wrong. Finding some common ground - saying “I know we would both like to sort this out”. Getting too close to the other person. Making a “peace offering”. Not assuming the other person has deliberately set out to be horrible. Interrupting. Offering to make amends. Talking over the other person. Using calm “non-angry” body language.

Can you add any ideas of your own? You could Can you add any ideas of your own? You could make a poster display of your ideas using a red background for “hotting up” and a blue one for “cooling down”. If you heard any of the responses in the classroom you could put a sticker next to it and we could see how ‘hot’ or ‘cool’ we are.
