2017 NMAA State Basketball Clinic BEING A GOOD PARTNER

The first steps to Crew Chemistry: BEFORE THE GAME The first steps to Crew Chemistry: As the R, he/she will contact his/her partners in advance to confirm game time and time of arrival. A good partner arrives on time with a clear head, positive attitude, a clean well-fitting uniform, and generally gives the impression that this is the place he/she wants to be and is with partners he/she wants to be with. The R leads and or participates in Pre-Game conference to set a good tone to establish teamwork and trust for the game. These can all set the tone for the entire game.

Pre-Game Examples

DURING THE GAME A good partner during the game: In shape, hustles, has good game awareness, and rules knowledge while demonstrating that he/she is focused and supportive of his/her partners by communicating and adjusting as needed throughout the game. Exudes confidence, has good people skills and is decisive in tough situations. Issues of importance with respect to behavior and/or unsporting acts, are not ignored.

DURING THE GAME CONTINUED Being firm but fair is an expectation. Communicates consistently through the use of NFHS mechanics, court positioning, displays a strong whistle, and a clear voice. If you have information, bring it immediately and with confidence. In communication with coaches, you may selectively hear, but not selectively see.

DURING THE GAME CONTINUED Calls made throughout the game are consistent and fit the game. Constant eye contact with your partners is essential. Good eye contact helps eliminate preventable officials errors such as illegal substitutions, wrong shooters as well as acknowledging keys to the game or disrupters. Team Player Calls in his/her own primary area Helps with secondary areas as needed When I blow in secondary coverage area, it will be a STRIKE with an open look Supports the crew at all times Willing to give/receive feedback in a positive manner.

AFTER THE GAME Participates in a post-game conference with the crew to discuss tough plays/calls, rule questions and decisions. The above are discussed openly and honestly. Completes the game report when assigned as the R. If there are any issues from that game, the R will consult with the other Officials before submitting the final report.
