Expository Writing

What is Expository Writing Have you ever written interesting facts about a person, place, or thing? Expository writing presents readers with important research and information about a topic.

Good Expository Writing has: Introduction Thesis Statement 3 Body Paragraphs Conclusion 3 Reasons Supporting Details Transitions

Introductions Lead/Hook 3 Reasons Thesis Statement

3 Body Paragraphs 3 Supporting details in EACH paragraph. Yes! That’s 9 in total.

Transitions You need to include a transition at the BEGINNING of the 2nd & 3rd body paragraphs.

Topic Sentence You need a topic sentence at the BEGINNING of the FIRST body paragraph.

A Great Lead/Hook “ I never proceed without an opening that think will produce a good piece of writing. That’s the only never in my personal toolbox.” - Donald Murray

Some Leads to Try Anecdote: a brief story that captures the essence of the issue or situation.

Some Leads to try: Quotation: a voice not your own that speaks to or exemplifies the problem or issue Try using a quote from the novel you studied. Perhaps use one from the character you’re writing about.

Some leads to try: Questions: Talk to your audience and ask them questions that pertain to your topic and strike an interest.

Conclusion Say your thesis AGAIN using different words. Just rephrase your main idea. Thesis: Maze Runner is my favourite novel in James Dashner’s series. Of the three novels in James Dashner’s dystopian series, the first book, Maze Runner, is top of the charts.

State your 3 Reasons AGAIN, using different words.

Challenge the reader What do you want your reader to think about once your paper is finished? Thesis: Maze Runner is my favourite novel in James Dashner’s series. Think About: The first book in a series gets the reader hooked. Perhaps trilogies shouldn’t exist. Authors could just quit while they’re ahead. What was George Lucas thinking?
