Thoughts On Suffering Psalm 55:16-23

The Existence Of Suffering Where is the idyllic period where there is no pain or death or suffering? It is not to be found in secular history Neither is it found in Biblical history (save in the Garden) Therefore, both AGREE on this part

Question assumes that such things are negative Pain is often a warning that something is wrong and/or should be avoided Suffering often reminds us of relief (more on this later) Death is a real part of living (often a release from suffering) Cf. Romans 5:12; Hebrews 9:27; Genesis 2:17

Things To Consider Job Almost always brought up on this subject He suffered greatly (family, prosperity, health, friends) Yet, it is not so much about Job’s suffer- ing; it is more about his reaction to it He “did not sin nor did he blame God” (Job 1:22) Job “did not sin with his lips” (Job. 2:10) Job maintained his integrity (Job 27:5) Job trusted in His Redeemer (Job 19:25)

Paul’s thorn in the flesh (2 Cor. 12:7-9) Daniel Law conceived to eliminate him (Dan.6:7) Daniel was undeterred (Dan. 6:10-11) Daniel trusted in God (Dan. 6:16, 22-23) Paul’s thorn in the flesh (2 Cor. 12:7-9) God did not remove it God did give him grace to bear it Jesus also suffered He learned from it (Heb. 5:8) Even to the death on the cross (Phil. 2:6)

The “Bigger Picture” We will learn about love There will be support, encouragement, prayers, etc. From brethren (Acts 12:5)

We will acquire appreciation If we are always on the mountain-top, we will not appreciate the view However, if occasionally in the valleys you do have an appreciation of the view Consider 2 Corinthians 4:17-18; Romans 8:16-18 We develop a reliance on God . 46:1)
