Update on NAF, MODAF and IDEAS LtCol Mikael Hagenbo, Swedish Armed Forces

NATO Architecture Framework NAF Management Syndicate (NMS) within NATO C3 Board (NC3B)/C3 Capability Coherence Sub Committee (C3CCSC)/Policy Working Group (PWG) are in the process of updating NAF to version 3.1. Syndicate lead for NMS is Patrick Gorman at MOD. NAF Metamodel (NMM) has been updated by Sweden (Lars-Olof Kihlström) to a version 3.1 were harmonization to MODAF 1.2 has been done. Experiences from NATO C3 Agency (NC3A) on their work with overarching architecture v.3, using NAF v3, might also trigger some changes for NMM v 3.1. We are still waiting for inputs from NC3A.

NATO Architecture Framework Progress with UPDM v1 and future baselines of UPDM are closely monitored by NMS national representatives, especially since DoD, MOD and Swedish Armed Forces all has endorsed Unified Profile for DoDAF and MODAF v1. To note is that decisions in NATO are made under consensus between 28 nations and not by NATO HQ or NC3A in Brussels. Development of Policy regarding standardization efforts of NMM and Architecture Data Exchange Mechanism (ADEM) + Architecture Data Exchange Specification (ADES) are drafted by PWG or NMS as decision proposals in NATO’s decision hierarchy.

International Defense Enterprise Architecture Specification (IDEAS) Australia, Canada, Sweden, UK & USA + NATO invited as observers Set out to develop a common information model to facilitate sharing and exchange of EA information between nations Quickly learned that terminology and implementation methods were not aligned between nations Required a more sophisticated approach We settled on using the BORO™ method – Business Object Re-Engineering Ontology Very strong on re-engineering multiple information models into one common model

International Defense Enterprise Architecture Specification (IDEAS) Version 1.0 of IDEAS Model is finished. Large chunks of it has influenced DoDAF 2. Next step is to socialize the model in IDEAS nations and test it. IDEAS Management Group are currently in the process of formulating the future vision and goals for IDEAS. Likewise, a marketing campaign plus supporting documentation is under discussion currently. Australia Canada Sweden United States United Kingdom

MODAF No decisions made yet about MODAF after v 1.2 In principal, MOD has stated that they want to give tool vendors and their own organization some time to digest and draw experiences out of version 1.2 for a couple of years. Triggers for future change in MODAF might be: Business needs in MOD Vision and goals for IDEAS Request for Change Proposals (RFCP) from other MODAF users like Swedish Armed Forces, Air Traffic Management (NATS, BAA, LFV in Sweden) Changes in NAF that might trigger changes in MODAF – like when SOA views first were introduced in NAF. A possible future policy to align MODAF and NAF with DODAF v2
