Requirements for GSICS Plotting Tool to support VIS/NIR products Masaya Takahashi (JMA)

Overview and Purpose Overview Purpose of this talk New GSICS product (EUMETSAT GEO-LEO-VNIR) will enter Demo-Phase soon GRWG: Requirements for the GSICS Bias Plotting Tool has been discussed GDWG: Need to update existing tool / develop new tool in order to support the new product Purpose of this talk To introduce GRWG requirements To discuss the feasibility of supporting GRWG requirement If yes, to propose solutions/plans

GSICS Bias Plotting Tool http://gsics.tools.eumetsat.int/plotter/ GPRCs have their own product monitoring/plotting websites “GSICS Plotting Tool” has been developed at EUMETSAT Common look and feel (easy comparison among multiple products) Dynamical plotting (no need to prepare lots of figures) At present, GEO-LEO-IR is only supported Primary user of the plotting tool: product users, NOT developers

Discussions at 2016 GSICS Annual Meeting Inputs from GRWG Bias monitoring would be a percentage departure from Day-1 Proposal: VNIR has it’s own web site, not combined with the IR Current IR one: visualize a time series of TB temperature biases Discussions at GDWG Requirements (i.e. document) for the Plotting Tool would be prepared by GRWG. Then, GDWG would start updating the tool The document is still under-preparation (?) by S. Wagner and M. Takahashi Member agencies’ supports to GDWG activities are necessary

Discussion Member agencies’ supports to the activity When GRWG prepares the requirement document, who could lead/support updating/establishing the plotting tool? Resources for supporting VNIR products How many person-months were needed to establish the current one at EUMETSAT? Do we need similar amounts of resources if we establish a dedicated plotting tool for VNIR products? Feasibility of updating the current tool to support VNIR products VNIR plotting contents are different from those for IR. Which way is better from GDWG viewpoint – developing new tool / expanding existing tool? Requirements which could be proposed in future Supporting Enhanced Data Model (e.g. grouping function)

Reasons to use the classic model: When to Use the Enhanced Data Model – from 2011 Unidata NetCDF Workshop http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf/workshops/2011/datamodels/Nc4-WhyUse.html Enhanced data model: offers rich features for structuring data, but breaks backward compatibility Classic model: simple, well-understood, and had been around for a long time a Reasons to use the classic model: Data using the classic model can be read by all existing netCDF software Writing programs for classic model data is easier Most or all existing netCDF conventions are targeted at the classic model Many great features, like compression, parallel I/O, large data sizes, etc., are available within the classic model Reasons to use the enhanced model: Complex data structures can be represented very easily in the data, leading to easier programming Description in the 2011 Unidata NetCDF Workshop website... If existing HDF5 applications produce or use these data, and depend on user-defined types, unsigned types, strings, or groups, then the enhanced model is required. In performance-critical applications, the enhanced model may provide significant benefits.
