What, When, and How was she God’s servant? Mary What, When, and How was she God’s servant? Megan McCarty, January 2008

What did Mary do to serve God? She accepted the call to bear Jesus (Luke 1:31, 1:38) She praised God through song (Luke 1:46-55) She gave birth to Jesus (Luke 2:7) She traveled as God led her (Luke 2:4-5, Matt 2:14, 2:21) She served as a mother Jesus and James, Joses, Simon, Judas (Matt 13:55) She accompanied Jesus She stood by Jesus at his crucifixion (John 19:25) She stayed and prayed with the disciples (Acts 1:14) She worked, prayed, praised!

When did Mary serve God? Before Jesus’ birth During Jesus’ lifetime She was ready (Luke 1:38) She was favored by God (Luke 1:28) During Jesus’ lifetime Service as a mother (Luke 2:7, Matt 13:55) She accompanied Jesus After Jesus’ resurrection She prayed (Acts 1:14) It looks like she served God most of her life!

How did Mary serve God? Readiness Humility Quiet, thoughtful (in what manner) Readiness She accepted God’s will without excuse or complaint Humility “I am the Lord’s servant” (Luke 1:38) Quiet, thoughtful “Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19) Strong, courageous Joseph nearly divorced her (Matthew 1:18-19) She had to travel when she was pregnant (Luke 2:4-5) She had to give birth in a stable (Luke 2:7) Her son died by crucifixion and she watched (John 19:25)

Mary teaches us to… Meditate on God’s works and God’s words Pray Read Scripture and consciously consider it Remember how God has worked in our own lives Pray Pray alone Pray together with God’s people Praise God Sing praise songs Be thankful and speak words of praise Trust that God knows best and obey Him Remain in Jesus (follow him) Live gracefully, quietly, and humbly
