Roald Dahl Day Who was Roald Dahl? What type of stories did he write? Have you read any Roald Dahl books? What is Roald Dahl Day?

His adult books include Tales of the Unexpected and My Uncle Oswald. Who was Roald Dahl Roald Dahl (13 September 1916 – 23 November 1990) was a British novelist, short story writer, poet, screenwriter, and fighter pilot.  His works for children include James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox, The BFG, George's Marvellous Medicine, and The Twits. Dahl's short stories are known for their unexpected endings and his children's books for their unusual humour! His adult books include Tales of the Unexpected and My Uncle Oswald.

What is Roald Dahl Day? September is Roald Dahl's birth month, and each year we celebrate with lots of wonderful events centred around his birthday on 13th September. Roald Dahl Day events include parties, book readings and in-school celebrations including the Dahlicious Dress Up Day, which is held every year towards the end of September in aid of Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity.

What is Roald Dahl Day? 2016 is the 11th annual Roald Dahl Day and celebrates 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl. This year will include many special events to mark the centenary of his birth including the “City of the Unexpected” in Cardiff, where some of Roald Dahl’s best-loved stories will be brought to life in the unlikeliest of places! (17th-18th of September 2016)

Early Life Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff, near Cardiff, on 13th September 1916. Roald's parents, Harald Dahl and Sofie Magdalene Hesselberg, were both Norwegian and he was named after Norway's famous polar explorer, Roald Amundsen.  Roald's father Harald was a successful shipbroker, however he died when Dahl was only three years old.

Early Life The Cathedral School (Llandaff, Cardiff) Dahl went to school in Cardiff until he was nine, then he went to a boarding school in England for four years. When World War II broke out in September 1939, Dahl joined the Royal Air Force. Since he was so tall, his fellow pilots called him ‘lofty’. He had to cram himself inside the cockpit of his fighter plane.

Family Life Dahl married American actress Patricia Neal on 2nd July 1953 at Trinity Church in New York City. Their marriage lasted for 30 years. Roald and Patricia had five children: Olivia Twenty (20th April 1955 – 17th November 1962); Chantal Sophia "Tessa" (born 1957); Theo Matthew (born 1960); Ophelia Magdalena (born 1964) and Lucy Neal (born 1965). Sadly at the age of just seven, Olivia died of measles. He found it very hard to talk about his feelings and for a while seemed to lose the will to live. Following a divorce from Neal in 1983, Dahl married Felicity Crosland.

The Writer Roald Dahl turned his adventures in the war into a story for adults. He called it “Shot Down Over Libya”. He began to write many famous novels and short stories for both adults and children. Dahl sometimes found it difficult to write stories for adults and began sending his publishers stories written for children. His first children's book was The Gremlins, published in 1943, about mischievous little creatures that were part of Royal Air Force folklore. Dahl's children's works are usually told from the point of view of a child. They typically involve adult villains, who hate and mistreat children, and feature at least one "good" adult.

Later Life During the 1980’s, Dahl turned 70 and became a literary legend. One new book after another achieved success. In 1984 and 1986, Dahl decided to write two autobiographies about his early life called “Boy” and “Going Solo”. His last book, “Matilda” (1988) was about a girl who overcomes her bullying parents. In six months, Matilda sold half a million copies. Dahl died in 1990. Two books, The Minpins and The Vicar of Nibbleswicke were published after his death.

Famous Quotes “Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.” “Don't gobblefunk around with words.” “Grown ups are complicated creatures, full of quirks and secrets.” “A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” “You can write about anything for children as long as you’ve got humour.”
