Chapter 5: Review What is the child care trilemma? What are some indicators of quality child care? When assessing the effect of child care, it is important to look at the whole child. What does this mean? T/F When looking for child care, making sure a program is licensed will ensure that it is a quality program. Piaget Curriculum models

Piaget examples What do we call the Piagetian stage during which understanding of the world comes through sensory experiences and motor actions? In talking with grandma on the phone, a child suddenly exclaims, “Oh, look at the pretty bird!” When his grandma asks him to describe the bird, the little boy says, “Out there, out there! Right there, grandma!” He gets frustrated when grandma continues to ask about the bird. What stage is most likely for this type of error? Two identical glasses are filled to the same level with juice. A child then watches as the juice is poured into a taller, thinner glass. The child announces, “It is still the same amount of juice – you can check by pouring it back.” Which stage does this illustrate? Mark spends a lot of time thinking about the world as it is now and as it could be if everyone took more personal responsibility for environmental and social conditions. Which stage best describes Mark?

Curriculum What is curriculum? What does it mean for curriculum to be teacher-directed or learner-directed? Organization such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the Southern Poverty Law, among others, promote providing “anti-bias education” for young children and “teaching tolerance” with kids. What do you think these mean?

In the news Effects of child care “…(D)ay care can be good (primarily for cognitive development), and day care can be bad (by making kids more aggressive and impulsive)—and the good seems to become less helpful the more educated and well-off parents are … But … (i)t’s impossible to predict how day care is going to affect an individual child.” Another important consideration: “when the mother’s choice was congruent with what she wanted and believed, children did well.” (From: http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/the_kids/2013/08/day_care_in_the_united_states_is_it_good_or_bad_for_kids.html)

Quiz 6 True/False The main purpose of school, from society’s perspective, is to help people prepare for meaningful jobs.   2) True/False Historically a major cause of inequalities in school funding is that that most states rely heavily upon property taxes for financing education. 3) True/False The concept of Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) under IDEA means that children with disabilities must be included at all times with students who are not disabled. True/False Magnet schools and charter schools are the same thing. Using your book, existing knowledge or a little research to answer, what is Common Core? (note, this is not covered in the 9th edition text)
