By Ogechi Onyeka, Dylan Stewart, Mercedes Carrasco & Scott Powell Summer Design Project December 2nd, 2015 By Ogechi Onyeka, Dylan Stewart, Mercedes Carrasco & Scott Powell

Framing Question How might we design a summer program for students seeking an internship experience in social innovation? Why Did We Chose This? Most Students Feel Intense Pressure to Have Summer Plans Summer Experiences Prepare Students for Real World Experiences Summer is the best time to explore interests and develop skills Summer is COMING!

Research What Do Students Really Need During The Summer? With Ideas Main Stakeholders Students: With Ideas Willing to develop other students’ ideas. Professors Interested in Mentorship With Connections in business Businesses Able to Mentor Willing to Mentor What Do Students Really Need During The Summer? Mentorship Actual Opportunities Funding Accommodation

Challenge Statement How can we incorporate students true needs into proposed summer programs?

Initial Ideas Pair Students with Innovative Companies For Mentorship. Online Platform For Students to Network With Each Other and Form Groups. Career Connections + LinkedIn.

The Plan Create an online platform for Duke student entrepreneurs to ideate, share, and join each other to design summer business programs that are entrepreneurial in nature.

Design Process We wanted our process to be: Lean: Human-centered: MVPs Fast iteration Constant research and testing Human-centered: Gives students a platform to share their creativity with like-minded individuals Offers an alternative to highly competitive and structured internships. Students are encouraged to be innovative and collaborative

Possible Setbacks Students Value Paid Internships The “Intrigue” of the Finance Industry at Duke Students might not feel involved when working on other students’ ideas Incentivizing companies interest in Mentorship Failure of Start-Ups Competition: DukeEngage & Study Abroad

Feedback From Stakeholders Students are willing to explore new career interests during the summer The Platform needs to be more mobile and interactive The Opportunities should be as engaging, challenging and interesting as current “competition” i.e. DukeEngage & Study Abroad Programs Salary not an issue, as long as funding is received

Pivot (Mobile app) Moving Forward…. Mobile App Version to increase accessibility and ease of use Student-led Initiatives Only Long-term Mentorship to ensure Continuity High Cost of Development

The Platform (Prototype = website)
