Step2. Fast Reading Task1: Find out the main characters in the play and draw a chart to show their relationship between each other. Task2: According to the chart, please summarizethe main idea of the play.

Step3. Careful Reading Reading the play carefully and try to get as much as information as you possible. Task1: 1..What did Portia do when she arrived at the court? 2. Why mustn’t Shylock take the pound of flesh from Antonio? 3. What did Shylock decide to take instead of the pound of flesh? 4. Why couldn’t he take the money instead? 5.What did Shylock do in the end?

If the debt is not repaid on time, Antonio will pay one pound of his flesh. Antonio is unable to pay the debt because his ships are lost. Shylock demands his pound of flesh. The duke tells Shylock to have mercy on Antonio. So does Portia. Bassanio promises to pay twice even ten times the money Antonio has borrowed,but Shylock insists on having his pound of flesh. Portia declares Shylock may have a pound of flesh, but no more no less.And if Shylock lets one drop of Antonio’s blood fall, he will lose all his land and money. Shylock begs for mercy. He is punished,though not killed.
