Tools for Metric Measurement

The Metric System (SI System) The Metric System is the Standard International (SI) system of measurement. Conversions in the metric system are all based on multiples of 10 There is one basic unit in the metric system (meters, grams, liters). Prefixes are used to express multiples of 10 when added to the base unit. Prefixes: milli (.001), centi (.01) , kilo (1,000) Most of the world uses this system (except the United States) It is used by Scientists all over the world. We use it in Science Class. Basic Units of Measurement in the Metric System Length- meters (m) Mass- grams (g) Volume- liters (l) Temperature- Celsius ( C) - We use scientific tools to measure matter (anything that has mass and take up space) and we use the metric system when taking these measurements.

1. Length- Metric Ruler or meter Stick -measures length or the distance between 2 points Metric Ruler -measures length In centimeters (cm) Or millimeters (mm) Meter Stick -measure length in meters (m), centimeters (cm) or millimeters (mm) -used to measure objects longer than a ruler. The screw has a length of 5.1 cm or 51 mm

2. Mass-Triple Beam Balance -measures mass which is the amount of matter is a substance or object The object has a mass of 473.4 grams

3. Volume-Graduated Cylinder Graduated Cylinder The volume of the liquid Is 43 mL -measures liquid volume or the amount of space a substance takes up. -when measuring the volume of a liquid, you must measure at eye-level and from the meniscus or curve that the liquid forms when it is in the graduated cylinder.

5. Temperature-Thermometer Thermometer -measures temperature or the amount of heat or thermal energy is a substance. -water freezes at 0 C and boils at 100 C
