Telling the Patriots Jyl Carter, RN

Tell the World Project Taking a turn at the White Board Who is better at telling the world than high school students? After all, they are witty, curious, and ready to learn! They also love to talk! I went to Albemarle High School, where I graduated in 2004, to tell the students about the healthcare field, ample job opportunities, and educational paths. I brought with me a speech, researched facts, my contact information, and DOUGHNUTS!

A tip, if you go to speak with high school students… Bring Treats!

My Delivery The class held 27 students. Some students wanted to go into nursing, some wanted to study medicine, and others were undecided. It was a mixed group of females and males with an array of personalities. I discussed with them the healthcare field, career options, different school paths, and the importance of education. I also discussed my personal story of how I became a nurse and the different experiences I have encountered. They enjoyed listening to me describe “calling codes” and how many IV’s I have started in my career. I was worried that the students wouldn’t have any questions, but I was wrong!

Answering questions the students had prepared days before my arrival. I offered the first doughnut to who ever asked an original question that was not included on their paper. A young man stood up and asked, “What is your very favorite football team and why?” He gave me a good laugh! I gave him two doughnuts.

After Discussing Healthcare… I held a Question and Answer circle. I had questions such as: “How do you manage stress?” and “Was there ever a time you didn’t want to be a nurse?” and “Can you give us advice on college applications?” I answered questions for thirty minutes and the class was fully engaged. After answering questions, I offered all 27 students a very unique opportunity. I handed out to each student a card with my name and email. I stated that for the remainder of the school year, I would be happy and honored to mentor each student. I promised to answer all questions they may have regarding their education and career goals. I promised them that if I don’t know the answer, we will figure it out together. I have already received 4 emails!

My speech and mentor cards.

My “Why” I chose to speak with the students from Albemarle High School to give back to my community and to empower the local high school students who are interested in the healthcare field today. I wanted each student to know they could succeed! After discussing the numerous career options and opportunities these students hold, I feel that I taught many aspiring nurses the importance of working hard, getting an excellent education, and staying determined to achieve their goals. After speaking with AHS students, I soon received and email stating that I would be in the January issue of the Patriot School Newspaper, and the faculty would love if I can do this each semester. I agreed!
