SHAC End of Year Report 2016-2017 State law requires the SHAC to submit an annual report to its local school board.

Goal 1: Provide Feedback and Recommendations for updating the District Wellness Policy FFA (LOCAL) SHAC Action: Beginning in September 2016, the SHAC requested input on this policy from FBISD stakeholders, including principals, district department heads, SHAC parents, FBISD BOT Members, PTA/Booster Clubs, PE and Health teachers and community SHAC members. The SHAC Executive Committee members attended a wellness policy training at a regional conference. The SHAC Executive Committee developed a timeline to ensure sufficient time was allotted to update, discuss, and make recommendations to the FBISD Board of Trustees. In December 2016, BOT member Grayle James provided policy development training for the SHAC Executive Committee. On January 17, 2017, the SHAC sponsored a stakeholder meeting to review, revise and complete the initial draft of the health and wellness plan. In February 2017, the SHAC reviewed and approved the health and wellness plan. A special committee of FBISD employees, parents, and SHAC members will develop and revise regulations and present them to the SHAC during the 2017-18 academic school year. Fort Bend ISD Action: The Wellness Policy underwent FBISD policy review and revision and the FBISD Board of Trustees approved FFA (Local) in June 2017. Cost: No cost to the District

Goal 2: Evaluate district-wide health and wellness programs. SHAC Action: The SHAC created the WATCH Award report. The report identifies the FBISD Campuses that are eligible for the 2016-17 WATCH School Wellness Recognition Award. Thirty-three (33) Schools are eligible for WATCH recognition. Each school will be presented with either a WATCH Award recognition banner or a WATCH Award recognition decal at the WELLCON Conference on October 7, 2017. The SHAC will continue to support the WATCH Award by encouraging to all FBISD Campus to participate this coming school year. The SHAC received an award of $2500 from the TMA Foundation to help with the promotion of WATCH activities. The SHAC worked with United Healthcare to continue Harvest of the Month. Each month a fruit or vegetable was highlighted, information about the item was shared including a recipe, and the item was featured on the school menu that month. The SHAC will promote the event and actively look for additional community partners to assist in next year’s program. The SHAC’s Nutrition Subcommittee distributed updated National Nutrition Month toolkits to principals and wellness champions. The nutrition subcommittee reviewed feedback from principals and wellness champions and needed changes and updates will be included in the toolkit for redistribution next spring during National Nutrition Month. Fort Bend ISD Action: The FBISD Health and PE Coordinator presented an overview of the WATCH School Wellness Recognition Award to FBISD Health and PE teachers during their required summer professional develop. The highlighted Harvest of the Month fruit or vegetable will continue to be featured on the school menu each month. Cost: No cost to the District

Goal 3: Evaluate and recommend community programs to be supported by FBISD. SHAC Action: Recommended creation of partnership to encourage awareness for Pediatric Cancer survivors in schools, Recognition of FBISD LLS Honoree. Dr. Tami Stout presented information to SHAC; other speakers included. Pride Survey from Fort Bend Regional SPARK Parks: Recognition of FBISD partnership with Ridgemont Elementary School Houston Food Bank: Partnership with FBISD to implement multiple program offerings Playworks: In-person Play Demonstration Fort Bend ISD Action: Creation and promotion of “Turn It Gold” in the upcoming academic year. Cost: No cost to the District

Goal 4: Implement Tobacco Prevention through health classes. SHAC Action: The SHAC invited M.D. Anderson to present their ASPIRE program for secondary campuses and their “Too Cool to Smoke” puppet show for elementary campuses. The SHAC recommended that the ASPIRE program be included in the middle school and high school health curriculum. Fort Bend ISD Action: ASPIRE has been added to middle and high school health curricula. ASPIRE program training will be provided to all FBISD health teachers as part of their required 2017-18 summer professional development. M.D. Anderson will introduce the “Too Cool to Smoke” puppet show to all elementary PE teacher during the 2017-18 summer professional development. Cost: No cost to the District, ASPIRE requires upload to computers for use

Goal 5: Evaluate Abstinence Curriculum SHAC Action: The SHAC reviewed current and available abstinence programs, including the “4th R” and “Choosing the Best” (Fifth Edition). Due to cost and additional instructive content including interactive social skill development, SHAC recommends the adoption of the “4th R” program. Description of programs: Dr. Jeff Temple from UTMB presented information about “4th R.” It is an evidence-based health curriculum that focuses on healthy adolescent relationships and reducing risky behaviors. Jeff Friedel with “Choosing the Best” described the program as an abstinence only curriculum. Fort Bend ISD Action: The Teaching and Learning Department will conduct an internal review and will make a final decision after piloting the “4th R” program in selected schools. The results of the pilot will be presented to the SHAC and BOT, once available. Cost: Currently both programs have a monetary cost. However, if “4th R” is adopted in its current form with an agreement to pilot the program, the program is free of charge for the life of the program. There was also an opportunity for additional FTE’s. “Choosing the Best” was originally a free program to the district, but there is a charge for the update and additional staff trainings.

Goal 6: Increase visibility and listening opportunities on school campuses SHAC Action: SHAC subcommittees visited Ridgemont Elementary School and Meadows Elementary School EDGE Program and Action Based Learning Lab Tour led by Shannon Bandish Nash (Ridgemont ES) Health Museum tour led by Debra Young (Meadows ES) Fort Bend ISD Action: No action required Cost: No cost to the District

Goal 7: Improve SHAC membership recruitment and retention SHAC Action: SHAC membership committee created by SHAC Chair. Fort Bend ISD Action: SHAC Executive Committee attended VIPS meetings, School Nurse Meetings as well as visited Campus wellness teams at individual schools. Cost: No cost to the District
