Clash Between Traditionalism and Modernism Ch. 29 History Alive!

Objective Students will be able to define key concepts from Ch. 29 and articulate the modernist and traditionalist views on youth culture and prohibition in the 1920s through reading comprehension and verbally describing their personal views.

The basics… Growing tensions between urban and rural areas The 1920 census revealed a startling statistic: More than 50% of the population lived in urban areas 19 million people moved from farms to cities in search of jobs. Factories employed lots of people during this time Lots of farms were failing, and rural areas held more traditional values. Many “urbanites” resented traditionalism Urban areas were more modern, people wanted to see change and were less attached to traditional roles and rules of behavior
