Leadership and Professional Skills Lesson SPHS 2016-17

Skills USA Professional Development Skills USA is entering its 52st year of serving students. Prior to September, 2004 Skills USA was known as Skills USA-VICA. Skills USA, in addition to competitions and fun is all about developing your career and workplace skills.

Skills USA Slogans and Statements 2016-17 National Theme- “Champions at Work” National Motto “Preparing for Leadership In The World of Work” Skills USA Promotes “Champions at Work” SPHS is going for the GOLD!

Skills USA has an official dress. For all official Skills USA state and national events an official dress code is followed. It includes Black slacks or black skirt White button down shirt Black dress shoes An official Skills USA red blazer or jacket Black socks Flip flops and t shirts are not allowed. Competitions and non-official events follow a more casual, school like dress code.

Did you know? That people have different styles of learning? This is important when training for a new job or learning a new skill. For example an auditory learner picks up new things fastest by having instructions spoken to them. So if you can hear instructions once and do the job right away you may be an auditory learner. Like working with your hands…. That is kinesthetic learning.

Need work experience? In some career fields it is possible to gain experience before applying for your first job. Programs such as internships (sometimes paid!), apprenticeship, and job shadowing exist to get new workers into a field and give them experience. Job shadowing using does not pay anything but allows you to follow a worker for a period of time to learn skills from that more experienced worker.

Professional Development Development the skills of a leader by… Increasing your technical knowledge….be the person everyone asks for help when they are struggling to grasp a new concept. Develop technical skills Have a positive attitude in your work Skills USA motto “Preparing for Leadership In The World of Work”

Colors. Red and white represent the individual states and chapters. Blue represents the common union of the states and of the chapters. Gold represents the individual, the most important element of the organization.

Skills USA Officers Within each Skills USA Chapter there are officers. It is the job of the reporter to reach out to the local community and handle public relations. This may be as simple as a text message to members or leading an event in the local community.

Officers. Do you know which officer is responsible for assisting the teacher / advisor with club funds? That would be the treasurer.

Officers, again. What does a chapter Vice President do? Program planning, the VP works with the advisor and president to set goals for community service, fund raising, and social events. Prepares a year end report, including membership information and tally points. Works with the advisor to bring in guest speakers.

I pledge allegiance…..to myself? The Skills USA Pledge starts out: Upon my honor, I pledge: This is a very strong statement. It means you are committed to follow through on your promise. Remember, the Skills USA pledge is a pledge to yourself, so don’t let yourself down.

Did you know? Skills USA is celebrating its 52th Anniversary this year? Skills USA was founded in 1965. Its probably older than your mom and dad……. or ME.

Would you like to know more? Visit Skills USA online at www.skillsusa.org or www.skillsusageorgia.org for our state chapter.

Go. Who is ultimately responsible for my success in school and in life?

That’s right. You are. Ultimately your success is your own. Parents, teachers, friends can all help you better yourself but it is your own effort that will determine your success.

Team & get a grip A group of people working together towards a common goal is what? I’d call it a TEAM. SPHS Skills USA is a team with one common goal- be the best it can be. One last thing, want to make a good first impression? Stand up straight, keep your eyes focused, and deliver a firm handshake. No noodle arms, no death grips, just a firm steady handshake.

We are going places- Field trips, Competitions, Events.

You Joining in??????????? Who is ultimately responsible for YOUR success in school and in life? YOU ARE!!!!!!!
