Testing your ability to identify information & ideas in a text SEARCH AND FIND Testing your ability to identify information & ideas in a text

You will be asked to look for... Explicit points – obvious bits E.G. ‘IT WAS COLD’ B. Implicit points – subtle/hidden meanings E.G. ‘HE HAD TO WEAR HIS COAT AS HE SLEPT’

INFORMATION RETRIEVAL (search and find) List reasons or details Make a list of… Explain what you learn...

Read lines 12 to 19 of the source. You must take your information from this section otherwise it will not be counted. Question 1 Read lines 12 to 19 of the source. List four things from this part of the text about the baby. 1. 2. 3. 4. Your points must be about the baby and nothing else. You can use your own words or short quotations from the text.

SEARCH AND FIND TIPS: Use whole sentences, but keep them brief. Do not copy whole chunks and sentences. Make five points for this five point question (6-7) CHECK YOUR ANSWER DO YOUR POINTS ANSWER THE QUESTION? HAVE YOU INCLUDED ANYTHING UNNECESSARY?

TEACHER TIPS:

TEACHER TIP 1: READ EACH QUESTION TWICE BEFORE YOU READ THE SPECIFIC LINES FROM THE EXTRACT THAT IT IS QUESTIONING YOU ON.

TEACHER TIP 2: MARK OR CIRCLE ON THE EXAM PAPER THE SELECTION YOU ARE ANSWERING ON E.G. LINES 1-12.

TEACHER TIP 3: READ WITH THE QUESTION IN MIND. USE A HIGHLIGHTER AS YOU READ TO PICK OUT KEY EVIDENCE THAT WILL HELP YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION.

he had wild eyes (correct or accepted) Many of my students failed to gain full marks because they simply didn’t read the question properly. Students need to answer in a simple sentence type answer Example: ‘List four things from this part of the text about the man’s physical appearance.’ he had wild eyes (correct or accepted) wild eyes (incorrect not accepted) Each answer must make sense on its own (i.e. a simple sentence)

Each time start with ‘THE MAN’ or ‘HE’. EXAMPLE: List four things from this part of the text about the man’s physical appearance. Each time start with ‘THE MAN’ or ‘HE’. He had wild eyes The man had wild eyes.

EDUAS PAPER 1 – READING A 20TH CENTURY TEXT

List 5 reactions the deputy has from Chigurh’s actions. READ FROM “HE DROPPED HIS CUFFS” TO THE LINE ENDING, “WENT INTO THE BATHROOM.” List 5 reactions the deputy has from Chigurh’s actions.

MARK OR CIRCLE ON THE EXAM PAPER THE SELECTION YOU ARE ANSWERING ON

List 5 reactions the deputy has from Chigurh’s actions. He dropped his cuffed hands over the deputy’s head and leaped into the air and slammed both knees against the back of the deputy’s neck and hauled back on the chain. They went to the floor. The deputy was trying to get his hands inside the chain but he could not. Chigurh lay there pulling back on the bracelets with his knees between his arms and his face averted. The deputy was flailing wildly and he’d begun to walk sideways over the floor in a circle, kicking over the wastebasket, kicking the chair across the room. He kicked shut the door and he wrapped the throwrug in a wad about them. He was gurgling and bleeding from the mouth. He was strangling on his own blood. Chigurh only hauled the harder. The nickelplated cuffs bit to the bone. The deputy’s right carotid artery burst and a jet of blood shot across the room and hit the wall and ran down it. The deputy’s legs slowed and then stopped. He lay jerking. Then he stopped moving altogether. Chigurh lay breathing quietly, holding him. When he got up he took the keys from the deputy’s belt and released himself and put the deputy’s revolver in the waistband of his trousers and went into the bathroom. READ FROM THE START UNTIL THE LINE ENDING, “WENT INTO THE BATHROOM.” List 5 reactions the deputy has from Chigurh’s actions. List 4 reactions the deputy has from Chigurh’s actions.
