3 Big Picture Goals Begin developing the Culture of Safety Internal, self-driven value for safe behavior Active concern for both personal safety and the safety of others Full understanding of the impact and consequence of unsafe behavior and acts Proactive thinking about safety, safe practices, and consequences Self-driven initiative to be safe and to promote the safety of others.

3 Big Picture Training Goals Teach the Professional Behaviors Attendance at training counts toward record Initiative: everyone must participate in the class at least once before lunch and once after Teamwork: All must participate in the Safety Discussion and contribute to the successful effort. Communication: Effective class participation, safety discussion leaders.

Understanding the Background Most students are new high school graduates First exposure to the concepts, practices, and reality of industrial safety Ideal point to introduce the concept of Safety Culture. Young, many habits and thoughts not yet developed, ready to be molded with the correct first experience, still eager learners.

Teaching Safety Culture Training involves multiple aspects of safety. Some of the training is intentionally “attention getting.” Important to emphasize that a manufacturing environment where Safety is seriously and continuously pursued is a SAFE environment.

Campus Action AMT Faculty guide students to 3 high-level outcomes: Complete an individual/team Safety Culture projects on the campus. Some activities should be done individually, some as a team. Sustain on a daily basis the Industrial Safety Model Condition of the AMC over the entire 5 semesters. Mentor back to the junior-level class.

AMC Condition AMC should use Lock-Out in all activities. Training equipment will need to be fitted for lock-out practice. AMC should maintain a model Lock-Out board and system for student locks. An active, student maintained Safety Board with regular Safety Walk-throughs are a key AMT activity

AMC Condition The Safety Commitment Banner (or substitute) should be maintained in a visible condition throughout the class’s tenure on campus. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) signage should be utilized throughout the AMC. Risk Assessment signage should be used with all machines.

Manufacturing Action It is highly recommended that employers follow-up campus activities with parallel manufacturing floor activities. For example, involve students in the upkeep of safety boards. Recommend use of the AMT “White Lock” policy. (AMT’s issued white locks, use “Last In-First Out priority.)

PB: Communication Verbal Communication is a key item in the teaching of all MCE’s Students must use Professional Presentation, both individually and as a team Self-driven communication feedback at the end of all presentations (self and audience)
