HOW DO WE KNOW GOD’S WILL ?

JOHN WESLEY, THE FOUNDER OF METHODISM, POSITED FOUR WAYS THAT WE KNOW GOD: THROUGH SEARCHING THE SCRIPTURES THROUGH FOLLOWING TRADITION THROUGH EXAMINING OUR EXPERIENCES THROUGH USING REASONING

These 4 ways make up what we call: The Wesleyan Quadrilateral QUARTANT 1. THE SCRIPTURES QUADRANT 2. TRADITION QUADRANT 3. OUR EXPERIENCES QUADRANT 4. REASONING

DIFFERENT CHURCHES EMPHASIZE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE QUADRILATERIAL

As evangelical churches, As evangelical churches,* Methodist churches are more inclined to stress learning God’s will through scripture more than through the other 3 quads. Other traditions stress other quads. *Evangelical churches are traditional (usually mainline) Protestant churches that believe that essence of the gospel is found in the doctrine of salvation by faith in Christ's atonement.

1st Spiritual Discipline: STUDYING THE HOLY SCRIPTURES John Wesley taught that “searching the scriptures” is a spiritual discipline. What do you think is the difference between “searching the scriptures” and “studying the scriptures”?

A WRITTEN ACTION POINT How can you increase your engagement in searching and studying the scriptures?

DIRECTIONS: A WRITTEN ACTION POINT To answer this question, write on your index card. First draw line down the middle on one side of the index card. At the top of one side, write the word “Scriptures.” Then below the word, write a Written Action Point - something you will do as a result of participating in this academy. Write one thing you will do to increase your engagement in searching and studying the scriptures.
