Abraham Lincoln Who: He was the 16th President of the United States from 1861-1865. Was born in Kentucky moved to Illinois What: He helped to guide the United States through a difficult time of the Civil War. Was going to bring the nation back together. Why: He issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared slaves free within the South in 1863, which was a turning point for the Civil War. Fact: In 1830 at 21 years of age, Lincoln got a job hauling freight down the Mississippi River to New Orleans on a flatboat.
