What is it, and what can it do? About Computers… What is it, and what can it do?

What is a Computer? [Norton] A Computer is an electronic device that processes data, converting it into information that is useful to people [Wikipedia] A Computer is a programmable device, usually electronic in nature, that can store, retrieve and process data A computer is a machine that is able to take information (input), do some work on or make changes to the information, to make new information (output).

Processing / Computation What is a computer? Processing / Computation Input Output

Basic Operations of a Computer Input Processing Storage Output

Complete Computer System A complete computer system includes four distinct parts

Hardware Computer hardware consists of electronic device; the part we can see and touch. The term "device" refers to any piece of hardware used by the computer, keyboard, monitor, modem, mouse, etc. Computer hardware consists of many different parts. They are divided in two different groups. Internal Hardware External Hardware Internal Hardware: An Internal Hardware means hardware that surrounded by the computer's casing. External Hardware: By external hardware we mean the entire computer device that we can see from outside.

Software Software is a set of electronic instructions that tells the computer how to do certain tasks. A set of instructions is often called a program. The two most common types of programs are: System Software System Software refers to the operating system and all utility programs that manage computer resources at a low level. Systems software includes compilers, loaders, linkers, and debuggers. Application Software Applications software comprises programs designed for an end user, such as word processors, database systems, and spreadsheet programs

Data Data consists of raw facts, which the computer can manipulate and process into information that is useful to people. Computerized data is digital, meaning that it has been reduced to digits, or numbers. The computer stores and reads all data as numbers. Although computers use data in digital form, they convert data into forms that people can understand, such as text, numerals, sounds, and images.

User People are the computer's operators, or users. Some types of computers can operate without much intervention from people, but personal computers are designed specifically for use by people.

Computers Everywhere Not just Desktops, Workstations, Tablet PCs, Handheld PCs (PDAs), Servers, Mainframe computers, Minicomputers But also… Cell phones Alarm Clocks Microwave Ovens Lighting control in a building Washing Machines

Summary At a low (processor) level, computer are pretty dumb and have to be told exactly what to do However, with intelligently written computer programs, computers can behave quite intelligently A computer is simply a device that computes, taking some input, processing it, and producing some output Computers can come in all sorts of forms, and not just the types you may be familiar with.

In brief About Computer Basic Parts of a Computer Inside a Computer

Now Answer these Questions Computer Data Represent by what? Computer is the combination of which two main parts? When people say “Computer”, what they actually mean? Personal Computer comes in two main styles. What are they? Computer comes with many other shapes and sizes. Give some examples. What is a server?

Now Answer these Questions 7) Name two Computer Casing. 8) If you want to see processed information on Computer then which Hardware device you need? 9) Give two types of mouse example. 10) What is Heat Sink? 11) If I want to upgrade my computer what type of slot I need to insert in my computer motherboard?

May Allah Bless you!!!!
