John 17:1-6

I. A relationship built on INTERACTION

(Joh 17:1) These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

A. The style of this prayer

Mt. Olivet Upper room

View of a street in Jesus’ time Overlook of the City with the Temple

(1Th 5:17) Pray without ceasing. (Rom 12:12) Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; (1Th 5:17) Pray without ceasing.

(2Sa 15:30) And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up. (2Sa 15:31) And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness. (2Sa 15:32) And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:

(Joh 17:1) These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

B. The spirituality of this prayer

(Joh 17:1) These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

(Col 4:2) Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; (Col 4:3) Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: (Col 4:4) That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

(Eph 6:18) Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; (Eph 6:19) And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, (Eph 6:20) For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

II. A relationship built on INTIMACY

(Joh 17:2) As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. (Joh 17:3) And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

(Joh 10:10) …I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

A. The intimacy comes only through the SPECIAL connection

B. The intimacy comes only through the SET

(Joh 15:23) He that hateth me hateth my Father also. (Joh 8:19) Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also. (Joh 8:42) Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. (Joh 15:23) He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

(Joh 14:6) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (Joh 14:7) If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

III. A relationship built on INITIATIVE

(Joh 17:4-5) I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

(1Co 10:31) Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

IV. A relationship built on INTENTIONS

(Joh 17:6) I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

A. The intentions is to SHOW his name

B. The intentions is to SAFEGUARD his word
