Hitler’s Europe World War II

A New War Hitler and Stalin signed a nonaggression pact (Promised not to attack each other). Hitler promised him territory- Divide Poland. Stalin would take Finland and the Baltic countries of Lithuania, and Estonia. September 1, 1939- Hitler invades Poland. September 3, 1939- France and Great Britain declare war. Hitler annexes western half of Poland. (Large German population)

Blitzkrieg Germany’s new military strategy. Lighting War Using fat-moving airplanes ad tanks, followed by massive infantry forces, to take enemy defenders by surprise.

Stalin on the Move September 17, 1939- USSR invades the eastern half of Poland. Annexes Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Finland puts a struggle but conquers in May 1940.

The Fall of France May 1940- Sweeps through: The Netherlands Belgium Luxembourg June 14- Germany takes Paris June 22- France surrenders

Germany versus GB France falls, GB is alone. Winston Churchill proclaimed “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets…we shall never surrender.” Summer 1940- Germany bombs London. The British resisted and Hitler decided to call off the attacks.

The Mediterranean September 1940- Mussolini attacks Egypt, disaster for Italians, Britain fights back. April 1941- Hitler persuades Bulgaria, Romania, and Hungary to join the Axis Powers. Invades Yugoslavia and Greece

Operation Barbarrosa His plan to invade the Soviet Union. June 22, 1941- Announced to attack the USSR. Pushed 500 miles inside Russia.
