Fig. 1 A model of the plasma cell survival niche in the bone marrow. The chemokine CXCL12 promotes the homing of plasma cell precursors to the bone marrow, while interactions between VCAM1 and VLA4 enable their retention in the niche. Bone marrow stromal cells secrete CXCL12 and IL-6, which function as plasma cell survival factors. In addition to stimulating plasma cell survival, CXCL12 also acts as a chemoattractant for eosinophilic granulocytes, which together with additional bone marrow-resident cells promote plasma cell survival by secreting APRIL and/or IL-6.
