Unit 2 Review Shape and Form

Curved and Angular Shapes Geometric and organic shapes may be either curved or angular. Curved Shape – shapes that are curved, graceful, and imply movement. The eye rapidly sweeps along them without interruption. Angular Shape – are shapes that are straight-edged. Your eyes move along the shape and stop momentarily where one shape connects with another.

Positive and Negative Shapes Every design is made of positive and negative shapes. Positive Shapes – tangible, actual aspects of a design. They are the solid forms, such as the flower in this artwork. Negative Shapes – areas that either surround the positive shapes or exist between them. They are the spaces AROUND the flower in this artwork. A successful design balances both.

Positive and Negative Shapes Shapes defined by objects are positive shapes. Shapes defined around objects are negative shapes.

What is the positive shape? What is the negative shape?

Smooth and Textured Shapes Another important quality of shape is its surface. Is it reflective like a pane of glass? Rough and pitted like tree bark? Your eyes will move quickly across a smooth surface like polished metal and slower across a textured surface like a turtle shell.

What textured surfaces do you see?

Project 1: Geometric Shapes project: 100 points On your piece of paper, you will use watercolor paints to paint inside the shapes you have drawn. REMINDER: You will be graded for your neatness and effort. PAINT INSIDE THE LINES!

Project 2: Positive and Negative Art Project Use a sheet of white paper, this will represent the NEGATIVE shapes. Use a sheet of construction paper, this will represent the POSITIVE shapes; Cut out at least 8 different shapes. Arrange the shapes into a variety of positions on your white paper to create an image or pattern. When you are satisfied with your design, glue down the shapes to the white paper.
