Chapter 10: State and National Standards Plato’s Physical Education: A guide to teaching physical education at all levels and in all environments.

Jobs of a Physical Educator #1 Keep students safe #2 Teach a skill #3 Teach students that activity is fun

National government Government says we have to teach certain things in schools National Standards State standards Local (school) standards Common Core Physical Education does not have a specific standard We are buried inside Science and Math

AAHPERD (SHAPE) The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) used to be the unofficial “governing body” of Physical Education. In 2013-2014, it changed its name to the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) The National Association of Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) was a subsection of AAHPERD. NASPE had “National Standards” that were mostly accepted by Physical Educators and schools

NASPE standards Standard 1 - The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns. Standard 2 - The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance. Standard 3 - The physically literate individual demonstrates the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical activity and fitness. Standard 4 - The physically literate individual exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others. Standard 5 - The physically literate individual recognizes the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and/or social interaction. State requirements From these NASPE standards, states formed their own more specific standards. Each state has their own set of standards See Table 10.1 for the list of states and links to their standards.

Pre-service Physical Educators University students majoring in Physical Education – Teacher Education have a set of standards as well. There are two levels Initial standards Advanced standards Each of these are broken down further into more detail.
