Services Layout – Update Latest work and developments of Service Module concept John Hill - RAL 6th November 2012 ATLAS ID Upgrade FtF
Recent developments of Service Module Design work on Service Module principle has continued in the UK. A number of updates have been undertaken on our baseline 1/32nd sector design. Recent developments on the proposed Cartigny Layout has lead to further investigations. These are: Update to Cooling Pipe layout, electrical connector and intalink design on barrel staves. Extra Cooling Line added in Service module to cope with power demands of short strip staves Potential changes to ID envelope have led us to look into alternative ‘narrow but wider’ SM design Thermal enclosure end plate ideas further developed 6th November 2012 ATLAS ID Upgrade FtF

Connectors and cable harness Following on from the study work undertaken by LAPP, the UK has followed this up by discussing possible solutions for cable and connector harnesses (PP0-PP1). As space is at a premium within the Service Module it may be necessary to ‘form’ specific cable sections to allow fitting. Typical Tekdata arrangement Several options for connector and shielding schemes are being investigated. Talks with Axon and Techdata are ongoing, Oxford will progress developments over the next couple of months following recent visit to Axon Typical Axon Micro-D 6th November 2012 ATLAS ID Upgrade FtF
Cooling manifold design CMS Manifold (EB welded) Typical SM manifold arrangement for narrow duct arrangement. Plans to manufacture working prototypes on this design Alternatives for manifold design can be investigated (using EB welding technology) 6th November 2012 ATLAS ID Upgrade FtF
Summary of work in UK ‘Mechanical’ update to UK stave design, update arrangement of cooling pipes, interlinks and connector (Stave connector and flexi yet to be fully defined) - Service module updated to incorporate extra cooling lines, cooling lines optimised to new stave arrangement, re-routing of barrel electrical services, hermetic seal for duct updated, thermal enclosure seal updated (we have yet to come up with the definitive PP1 connector arrangement for SM) Cartigny proposals have not changed the basic principle of Service Module design or installation for barrels although this has led us to scheme the narrow SM (does this arrangement work with the End Cap design and envelope…?) -Engineering and working prototypes of ‘typical’ cooling manifold to be manufactured (using vacuum brazing) at RAL based on current SM layout design -Engineering and working cable harnesses to be manufactured, probably by both companies (Axon and Tekdata), Oxford to progress. 6th November 2012 ATLAS ID Upgrade FtF
