“Taiwan Breeds Green Glowing Pigs”

Genetic Engineering By the end of the lesson you should be able to: Understand the method used in genetic engineering Make judgements about whether genetic engineering is right or wrong based on social, ethical and economical arguments

What is genetic engineering? Inserting a gene from one living thing into another living thing Why do genetic engineering? To allow living things to make a protein that they wouldn’t normally make

Some real examples… Cut and stick the sheet to match the gene, the recipient organism and the reason why genetic engineering is done

A Common Use Insertion of human insulin gene into bacteria Why not just use animal insulin? Why insert gene into bacteria?

So, how exactly is it done?

Sometimes extra genes are added in to the plasmid to act as “marker genes” so we can see if the insertion has worked. This could be a ‘glow in the dark’ gene, or more commonly an antibiotic resistance gene. The bacteria with the useful gene and the antibiotic resistance gene would survive having an antibiotic added to them

Right or Wrong?

Arguments for and Against Genetic Engineering Table? Bullet points? Speech bubbles for different people? Presentation!! Titles + Underlining / Highlighting
