Synoptic Variability of the Exchange Flow in the Turkish Straits This averaging procedure provides an ensemble-mean visualization of flow structures responsible for erosion “events”. Preliminary evidence indicates that surface stress peaks are associated with the passage of inclined, high-momentum regions flanked by adjacent low-momentum regions.   . The Environmental Fluid Dynamics Lecture Series Presents a Seminar Synoptic Variability of the Exchange Flow in the Turkish Straits Dr. Ewa Jarosz Principal Investigator Oceanography Division Naval Research Laboratory Stennis Space Center Mississippi Tuesday, April 12, 2016 129 Hayes-Healy 11 am-12 noon Observations from the EPOS project funded by the Naval Research Laboratory have demonstrated that synoptic variations (2-10 days) of the exchange flows in the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Straits are very energetic and that they are two or more times larger than long-term means (monthly to annual). Synoptic fluctuations in these two straits are highly related to the variability of the bottom pressure anomaly gradient and are partly related to local atmospheric forcing. The observations have produced a unique time series of volume fluxes that are paramount to the understanding of flow dynamics and ecology in neighboring seas, i.e., in the Black, Marmara, and Aegean Seas. Ewa Jarosz has been a principal investigator in the Oceanography Division of the Naval Research Laboratory since 2004. She holds a M.S. (1989) in physical oceanography from Gdansk University, Poland, and a M.S. (1997) and a Ph.D. (2002) in oceanography and coastal sciences from Louisiana State University. Her areas of research interest include strait dynamics, mixing processes, internal waves, and coastal and deep ocean circulation. She is an author or co-author of 34 referred journal articles.
