Workshop Outline

Welcome and Introductions Outline Welcome and Introductions Taking a Life-Cycle Perspective in ISO 14001:2015 Tools, Methods and Standards & results of IEMA Survey Roundtable group-work Feedback

Quick Introductions Who you are Your role and organisation Your interest in ISO 14001:2015 and life-cycle thinking

Context Life Cycle Thinking in ISO 14001

Life-Cycle Thinking in ISO 14001:2015 Recognition that: too many organisations focus environmental management on operational impacts huge potential to drive performance improvements through supply-chains & better products/services no desire to require full LCA for all users

Life-Cycle Thinking in ISO 14001:2015 consecutive and interlinked stages of a product (or service) system, from raw material acquisition or generation from natural resources to final disposal Note 1 to entry: The life cycle stages include acquisition of raw materials, design, production, transportation/ delivery, use, end-of-life treatment and final disposal

Life-Cycle Thinking in ISO 14001:2015 Requirements include: 6.1.2 - consider a life-cycle perspective in the identification and evaluation of environmental aspects 8.1 – consistent with a life-cycle perspective…. Put in place controls in design/development process….considering each life-cycle stage Set environment requirements for procurement Consider the need to provide information on significant environmental impacts for “forward life-cycle stages”

Life-Cycle Thinking in ISO 14001:2015 Overall intent: For organisations to focus their efforts on making significant improvements in environmental performance….. “does not require a detailed life cycle assessment” [Annex A.6.1.2]

Questions or Comments?

What approaches have you taken to taking a life-cycle perspective? Working in Groups What approaches have you taken to taking a life-cycle perspective? What are the key practical challenges you face in your organisation to taking a life-cycle perspective? What, if any, value have you derived? What guidance and support would you most value?
