Presented by BEATRICE MUNDIA Date: 18th September 2015 Impact Of Implementing Quality Management System At Dandora II Health Centre Laboratory In Nairobi City County. Presented by BEATRICE MUNDIA Date: 18th September 2015

Introduction Laboratory services are an essential component in diagnosis and treatment of various illnesses and therefore reliability and accuracy of results is critical. This can only be achieved through implementation of a laboratory quality management system. Kenya, through the support of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other partners, is implementing the WHO/AFRO Strengthening Laboratory Management Towards Accreditation (SLMTA) program in various laboratories across the country. In 2012, AMREF in collaboration with Management Sciences for Health (MSH), introduced quality management systems at Dandora II H/C laboratory, which is a public entity, by Nairobi City County.

Objectives: To improve the quality of laboratory services offered in the public health center of Dandora II. Strengthen laboratory management. Laboratory accreditation

Methodology. SLMTA Sensitization (in charges & Lab Staff BASELINE ASSESSMENT Workshop 1 2 3 Outcome Staff attitude changes Laboratory improvement(SLIPTA checklist) Training biosafety/biosecurity(lab staff) Improvement projects & compulsory activities. Results Increased management involvement and commitment to support the laboratory operations. improved documentation& established continual improvement mechanisms such as management review, tracking of quality indicators, improvement projects, corrective actions and customer satisfaction surveillance. enrollment and participation in internationally recognized EQA programs, changes in lab layout such as acquisition of stores and phlebotomy rooms.

Results embracement of information technology due to new equipment such as computers & printers. safety fittings such as fire alarms, blankets & extinguishers are available and easily accessible. new training opportunities and change of attitude by the lab staff from casual to enthusiasm coupled with ownership of the process.

Challenges Staff shortage stock outs nonfunctioning equipment lack of Q.C materials limited internet access infrastructural ineffectiveness insufficient laboratory funding.

Conclusion SLMTA approach provides a great opportunity to learn by doing so as to produce tangible results. Model can be adopted at all levels of health care. Promotes positive behavioral change by staff.

Recommendation Enrollment of all public health laboratories in the accreditation process. Establishment of a system to ensure sustainability long after they have been accredited.
