Assassination of Franz Ferdinand Anna Field C Block

In a nutshell… Archduke Franz Ferdinand and heir to the Austrian Throne and Duchess Sophie were killed on June 28, 1914 in Sarajevo, Serbia by Gavrilo Princip (Serbian Nationalist) who was a member of the Black Hand. Black Hand = Serbian Nationalist Terror Group Their Goal: Scare Austria away from the Slavs Their Plan: Bomb Franz Ferdinand’s car to scare Austria

Why do we care? The Assassination of Franz Ferdinand was a main cause of World War I. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia after issued the July Ultimatum to Serbia regarding the assassination. Russia sent a telegram to Serbia supporting Austria-Hungary. July Ultimatum wanted to condemn dangerous propaganda against Austria-Hungary, eliminate all propaganda, and provide explanations to the government about Serbian officials who are hostile to the Austria-Hungary.

How? Franz Ferdinand’s assassination was planned; however, it did NOT follow the plan. The automobile passed the first assassin. He was given a bomb, but it bounced off of the convertible’s cover into the street. It exploded under the next car which killed innocent people. The assassin attempted suicide by taking a cyanide pill and jumping into the Miljacka River. The Miljacka River was only 13 cm deep, and the cyanide pill only caused vomiting. Overall, his suicide attempt failed. While driving, their driver took the wrong route; to fix this mistake, he put the car in reverse to go back to the correct turn. Gavrilo Princip appears and shoots both Franz and Sophie, but he later said that he intended on murdering the driver.

Interesting Facts Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, were killed on their wedding anniversary. He died at age 50 while Sophie died at age 46. He had a passion for roses He hunted nearly 300,000 animals The 1911 Gräf & Stift 28/32 PSDouble Phaeton that Franz Ferdinand was killed in. A map with the events of June 28, 1914.
