Going to War

Nationalism Patriotic feelings, principles, or efforts An extreme form of this marked by a feeling of superiority over other countries.

October 6, 1908 Austria annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina into the Austro-Hungary empire. This angered the Serbs, they wanted their own Serbian empire

1914 The black hand A Serb nationalist group learns that the Heir-Apparent to the Austrian throne, Franz Ferdinand, will visit Sarajevo in June. Three young Bosnians were recruited to assassinate him Gavrilo Princip, Nedjelko Cabrionvi, and Trifko Grabez

June 5th, 1914 The black hand was popular in Serbia and well known The Prime Minster of Serbia was conflicted should he tell Austria or not? It was decided to tell Austria in a very diplomatic way A Serbian Minister to Vienna was given the task to go to Austria and suggest Ferdinand not go to Sarajevo No one understood the warning

June 28th, 1914 The Visit Franz-Ferdinand accepts and invitation to inspect the army maneuvers being held outside Sarajevo Security would not be tight Ferdinand was brave and disliked the idea of secret service and Sarajevo was not a hostile territory. Ferdinand and Sophie are shot after a series of miscommunications.

July –The July Crisis The Arch-Duke’s assassination was the final straw Serbia had been making trouble in Austria for Many years Austria-Hungary created a list of ten demand and gave it to Serbia The demands were to stop Serbian interference in Bosnia Serbia only gave into eight of the ten demands Meanwhile the countries of Europe were scrambling to figure out what their alliances meant.
