The Armed Forces Covenant What is it and what does it mean? It is a pledge that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives. Within LPT this means that the Armed Forces Family should not be discriminated against when it comes to receiving medical care.

Statistics

Statistics Between 1996 and 2005 223,803 people left Military Service of which 224 committed suicide or 1 per 1000 service leavers. According to the ONS in 2015 the general rate of suicide across the general population was 1.1 per 1000 In 2016 it is estimated the East Midlands has 187,000 Military Veterans or 7.4% of the National amount. The 2011 census says LLR has a population of 1,017,697. Based on that analysis LLR has 75,309 Veterans (decreased in the last 6 years due to death). According to the MOD LLR has approximately 32,000 Military Veterans. According to the US Veterans Association in 2016 39.5% of Veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from major depression, PTSD or traumatic brain injury.

How do you spot a veteran? Veterans – like the general population come in all shapes and sizes. However, certain signs may identify a veteran including: Military tattoos Veterans badges/ Military wrist bands Posture Tidy/ neat appearance – creases in shirt sleeves Uses 24 hour clock and phonetic alphabet (postcode!) Hyper vigilance – very attentive to detail However, appearance could be the complete opposite but when you ask the question a negative response will have a delay to it.

Community Links People who are connected to a network of people often helps with recovery and staying healthy There are a range of military specific and voluntary organisations who can provide support to veterans We have created an information leaflet that members of the Armed Forces Family can use if they need contact services within the Community.

Armed Forces Champion Role. Are you part of the Armed Forces Family? Have you served in HM Forces? Parent(s) served in HM Forces? Spouse served in HM Forces? You have an interest in the role HM Forces do? If you answered yes to any of the above, please consider being an Armed Forces Champion on your team. What does this involve?
