Eating Smart • Being Active What’s New?

Lesson plans 9 core lessons 3 supplemental lessons Welcome to Eating Smart • Being Active Get Moving! Plan, Shop $ave Fruits and Veggies: Half Your Plate Make half Your Grains Whole Go Lean With Protein Build Strong Bones Make a Change Celebrate! Eat Smart and be Active 3 supplemental lessons Eating Smart and Being Active During Pregnancy Feeding Your New Baby Feeding Your Baby Solid Foods There are now 9 core lessons instead of 8 Nine lessons provide more time to build rapport with participants while still including food activities in every lesson Every lesson includes a food preparation activity with participants. All lessons except the first lesson include a 10-15 minute physical activity segment where the educator leads participants in physical activity. There are 3 supplemental lessons as well

Materials for implementing 9 core lesson plans Visuals Lesson visuals Physical activity visuals Worksheets and handouts Lesson enhancements There are a number of materials that have been designed for educators and participants The 9 core lesson plans come with an Educator’s Guide There are lesson content visuals and physical activity visuals Physical activity visuals show the Cardio Pyramid with warm-up and celebration circuit There are full-color worksheets and handouts with photos to use with participants We will have a variety of lesson enhancements that reinforce messages covered in the lessons

Lesson support materials Activity bins Food preparation kits Lesson planning and preparation checklist Recipe preparation guide Recipes Recipe scripts A variety of materials are available that help support teaching the lessons Each lesson requires and activity bin to successfully teach it-we will post files on the share drive with instructions on how to create the kits Food preparation kits can be created listing the supplies needed to teach the food preparation activity in the lessons Lesson planning preparation checklists will list items needed to teach the lessons Each lesson includes recipes to choose from for in-class preparation The activity bin will include scrips for the lesson recipes

Knife safety Lesson 1 Proper knife safety skills included in lesson Paperwork spilt between lessons 1 and 2 Time for food preparation activity in both lessons 1 and 2 Many recipes require the use of a knife Proper knife safety skills are now a content topic ln lesson 1 Adding knife safety to lesson 1 splits up paperwork needed in EFNEP between 2 lessons and allows time for a food preparation activity in both lessons 1 and 2

Farmers’ market segment Lesson 4 Fruits and Veggies: Half Your Plate Do Shopping at Farmers’ Markets segment during times of year markets are open in your area Do Create a Meal segment instead of Shopping at Farmers’ Markets when markets not open Include information on Seasonal and Simple app Another new segment is information about farmers’ markets using SNAP benefits This segment is included in lesson 4 Fruits and Veggies: Half Your Plate You can do this segment during the times of year that farmers’ markets are open in your area This is a great time to introduce participants to the Seasonal and Simple app The last page of the handout provides participants space to write down local farmers’ market information When markets are not open, do the Create a Meal segment instead

Physical activity Let’s be active segment Warm up Cardio Muscle and bone strengthening Cool down The physical activity segments have been completely revised and kicked up a notch There is a Let’s be active segment in every lesson except lesson 1 Each segment includes a warm up, cardio activity, muscle and bone strengthening activity and a cool down activity

Physical activity Warm up Each segment includes a warm up activity and warm up visual that can be used in class

Physical activity Cardio Option A: Walk Indoors with Leslie Sansone DVD Option B: Cardio Pyramid with Warm-Up All lessons (except for the first lesson where we talk about what to expect for physical activities in future lessons) include a Let’s be active segment that is 10-20 minutes long. Each segment includes cardio with a warm-up: Educators get two choices for the cardio and warm-up: 1) the Walk Indoors with Leslie Sansone DVD developed by Rutgers; most of you are familiar with this DVD. These segments take at least 15 minutes to complete; 2) the Eating Smart • Being Active Cardio Pyramid with Warm-Up. Early lessons in the series include the Basic Cardio Pyramid. As lessons progress through the series, the educator shows participants how to increase the intensity of the moves, AND a new move is added in each lesson. The Cardio Pyramid with Warm-Up takes about 7 minutes. Choose one of these options, and use it through an entire series with a group rather than jumping back and forth between the two. Switching back and forth would confuse participants because both options build on themselves from segment to segment. If you as an educator have some physical limitations, you may want to always use the Walk Indoors DVD.

Strength-building activity Physical activity Strength-building activity Strength-building activity After the cardio activity (walking DVD or Cardio Pyramid), every lesson has a different strength-building activity that targets muscle- and/or bone-strengthening. Some of these activities include calf raises, lunges, and triceps kickbacks. These strength-building activities take no more than 3-5 minutes to complete.

Physical activity training videos For NPA use while learning Not for use with participants There are physical activity training videos you can use to become more comfortable with the exercises. You can learn and practice the activities before ever using them in class. This will help you feel more confident in doing the activities with your group You will NOT use these videos with participants Links to the training videos will be posted on the share drive

Physical activities and activity tracker Smartphone mobile app Free app App store (Apple) and Google Play (Android) Recipes Physical activities and activity tracker Unit price calculator Another new feature is the use of the smartphone mobile app This app is free and available for Apple and Android pones The app includes access to all recipes and physical activities in the lessons, a physical activity tracker, and a unit price calculator

Food preparation Let’s cook activity in every lesson A big change to the revised curriculum is that all food activities have been changed to food preparations. Teaching cooking skills to participants is critical to their success in achieving behavior change Each lesson includes a variety of recipes. You can choose recipes based on which work better in each class setting.

This has been a brief overview of the curriculum revisions More detailed trainings on the changes will follow, so look forward to more information on how you can implement the exciting revisions found in Eating Smart Being Active!
