Third (Minor) Parties! Minor Parties have been around since the county’s founding A Third Party is any party which is not one of the two major parties While they are all different, they all agree on this: neither major party is meeting certain needs

Types of Third Parties Single-Issue Party - Focuses exclusively on one issue: social, economic, or moral; Liberty Party, Free Soil Party Ideological Party – Focuses on how to change society overall; Socialist Labor Party, Communist Party USA, Libertarian Party Splinter Party – Splits away from one of the major parties because of a disagreement; TEA Party, Bull Moose Party

What is their Purpose? Greatly influence the outcome of national elections In 1912, Roosevelt’s Bull Moose Party pulled enough votes away from the Republican Party that the Democrats won. In 1968, a similar occurrence occurred with Richard Nixon. In 1992, Bill Clinton. This has happened with many more elections in our nation’s history.
